Granit Xhaka reflects on Sunderland’s excellent performance and playing Tottenham under new coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka lauded his team’s effort following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, while also giving his thoughts on facing Roberto De Zerbi’s side in their first game under new management.

The Black Cats delivered a powerful and composed performance at the Stadium of Light, winning three points in a furious and competitive match. Xhaka felt the outcome was especially significant given Sunderland’s recent home record.

After nearly four weeks away from home, it was crucial to return and provide the supporters what they deserve, especially after three home defeats, and I feel today we were the better team,” he remarked. “We deserve three points, both individually and collectively. The team’s power and energy are incredible, and we knew before the season, in the middle of the season, and now that we can defeat anyone if we stick together, play like this with this energy, be a part of the team, and earn the next three points.

Throughout the game, Sunderland’s intensity, both on and off the ball, was noticeable, with Xhaka stressing the value of togetherness and consistency as the season approaches its final weeks. The game also provided a special challenge, as Tottenham adjusted to life under De Zerbi after his recent appointment.

“It’s always tough to play against a team that has recently changed managers since you don’t know how many of their ideas you’re going to see,” Xhaka explained. “I think it’s not the first time this season that we’re playing against a side that has changed their coach, and we know the new coach very well from Tottenham. He enjoys ball control, has the passion, emotion, and mindset to win.

Despite the ambiguity, Sunderland were able to impose themselves on the game, restricting Tottenham’s attack while preserving control in key portions. “But yes, we put on a terrific game from our end, and in the end it’s up to us how much we want, how good we are without the ball, with the ball, and I think today was a nearly perfect game,” Xhaka added.
