Please let me know if this is beginning to sound familiar, but a five-star talent with connections to Prolific Prep recently declared his commitment to BYU basketball on ESPN after reclassifying up a grade level.

In the world of college basketball, time is a circle, and BYU basketball is having the best Groundhog Day scenario of all time.

Bruce Branch III, the ESPN class of 2026’s No. 6 recruit and the class of 2027’s No. 1 recruit before reclassifying, wept on ESPN as he thanked everyone who helped him get to where he is now. Branch had to pause while discussing his family, remembering the hurdles they had surmounted as a unit on his journey.

Branch grinned as he regained his composure, then stood from his chair and displayed royal blue underneath his jacket, proudly wearing BYU on the chest of his No. 3 jersey.

Branch’s commitment marks the third straight year that Kevin Young’s program has landed a five-star freshman recruit, beginning with Egor Demin, followed by AJ Dybantsa, and now Bruce Brach III. It looks like Branch will be wearing number three in Provo, similar to his predecessors, if AJ Dybantsa decides to enter his name into the NBA Draft this summer.

Despite their on-court issues, BYU basketball’s recruiting efficiency has not fallen. His ultimate decision came down to two schools, BYU and USC, but Kevin Young’s NBA-level program, training style, and facilities persuaded Branch to relocate to Provo.

During Branch’s official trip, his coach emphasized the most appealing features of BYU’s program.

His trip to BYU was quite high-level. They showed him what AJ Dybantsa is doing, and they believe he is perfect for the position because of his size, length, abilities, and ability to contribute in a variety of ways. Bruce appreciated the basketball presentation, which included everything from exercises, practice, and diet to strength and conditioning and recuperation. He got to witness them play Arizona and learn how they operate on game day.

One notable point is the absence of any financial reference. With the top-level athletes clearly receiving substantial NIL checks across the board, recruiting boils down to one important factor: which program will properly prepare these young players for a career at the professional level. The solution for Bruce Branch III was BYU.
