Michigan State gained a significant pledge this weekend when four-star Chicago-based defensive lineman Ohimai Ozolua chose the Spartans over Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State.

Pat Fitzgerald obtained his first four-star commitment in the 2027 class, which was a fantastic way to conclude a strong spring. And it doesn’t appear that the Spartans’ first-year head coach will have to worry about Ozolua leaving due to a decommitment.

Ozolua declared that he was formally “shutting down” his recruitment roughly 48 hours after committing to Michigan State, confirming that he was 100% committed to the Spartans.

These days, a top prospect declaring that he is closing down his recruitment does not indicate much, since a lot can happen in recruiting. This feels a little different. After listening to Ozolua discuss the coaching staff and how he felt like a priority to Fitzgerald and Co. , as well as the fact that he agreed before making his official trip to Michigan State, I know everything I need to know.

Ozolua is locked in and completely committed to Fitzgerald’s strategy.

I’ll presume that studying under Winston DeLattiboudere II is also a significant element. The former NFL defensive line coach is in East Lansing to coach the same team, and top recruits have noticed. Having a position coach with NFL experience is a big plus. He knows how to get them to the league.

According to 247Sports, Ozolua is the No. 408 overall recruit and the 49th-best defensive lineman in the 2027 class. The No. 15 prospect in Illinois had offers from the likes of Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Miami, Vanderbilt, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Tennessee, among others.

It appears that he has secured his position as a future ‘Spartan Dawg’.

Michigan State’s 2027 class is off to a solid start.
As of April 26, the Spartans’ 2027 class is ranked 34th in the country, but it has a strong foundation with several excellent offensive linemen, a quarterback, a talented running back, a developing defensive back, and now a four-star defensive lineman.

A veteran coach like Fitzgerald understands how to create a squad through recruiting, and he has done an excellent job with his first six commitments for the 2027 cycle.

Fortunately for him, he has surrounded himself with some excellent recruiters, including DeLattiboudere, Courtney Hawkins, Joe Rossi, Max Bullough, and Brian Wozniak. He is properly placed to succeed, and his young, dynamic team is already producing results.

The future is promising in East Lansing, this time for real.
