Michigan State football’s recruiting emphasis on the Midwest continues with another addition.
Jack Schuler, a 2027 three-star defensive end from Bishop Watterson High School in Columbus, Ohio, declared his commitment to the Spartans on social media on Thursday.
Pat Fitzgerald, the new head coach, has seven commitments for Michigan State’s 2027 class, including three from Ohio, two from Michigan, one from Illinois, and one from New Jersey. Schuler is the group’s second defensive lineman, alongside four-star Ohimai Ozolua from Chicago.
Schuler is listed as the No. 39 prospect in Ohio, the No. 79 Edge in the class, standing 6-foot-5 and weighing 240 pounds. His other offers include UConn, Marshall, Central Michigan, and Iowa State.
Michigan State Adds Three-Star EDGE Jack Schuler, Continuing to Build in the Trenches
They say there is no peace for the wicked. Pat Fitzgerald and the Michigan State Spartans football team are working hard around the clock to build the future basis of the green and white, aiming to be the “wicked”—but for good.
With a message from Fitzgerald late Wednesday night—one that has now become synonymous with excitement in East Lansing—a bright Spartan helmet flashed on X, indicating that the Spartans had sealed another prospect.
This time, the Fitz signal shines for EDGE rusher Jack Schuler.
Schuler is 6’5″ tall and weighs 240 pounds. He attends Bishop Watterson High School in Columbus, Ohio, where he helped lead his squad to consecutive state titles.
According to 247Sports, Schuler is the No. 80 EDGE prospect in the 2027 class. He is rated as a three-star prospect with a rating of 86, making him the No. 40 overall recruit in Ohio for the 2027 class.
Schuler’s composite score is 0. 860, matching the 247 rating. According to composite scores, he is the No. 79 EDGE prospect and the No. 39 overall player in Ohio. Nationally, he ranks 1,034th.
Before committing to Michigan State, Schuler was heavily recruited by numerous MAC teams, including Kent State, Ball State, Marshall, and in-state foe Central Michigan. However, it was the green and white colors, as well as the chance to compete in the Big Ten, that won him over.
The Spartans depended on important defensive thinkers throughout the recruitment, including Winston DeLattiboudere and Joe Rossi. DeLattiboudere, in particular, has been all over the recruiting trail this summer, obtaining some of the best defensive line talent in the nation. It was a primary reason why Fitzgerald prioritized bringing him on board. DeLattiboudere, who formerly served as defensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals, understands exactly what the next level requires and how to assist players in achieving it.
It’s no surprise that the recruits we write about week after week are trench players. That is an area that Fitzgerald and the Spartans are obviously focusing on for the foreseeable future. Win the trenches, and you will be in a battle-ready posture to win games. To accomplish so, you must start young and create the groundwork, something Michigan State is obviously dedicated to doing.
Schuler’s commitment comes just days after the Spartans acquired another defensive lineman in Ohimai Ozolua. Michigan State has continued to stockpile defensive and offensive line prospects for the 2027 class. As of right now, the Spartans have seven commitments in the class, all of whom are rated as three-star possibilities.
On the field, Schuler concluded his junior season with 84 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, nine sacks, and nine pass deflections. He plays with a strong sense of hunger and physicality, never hesitant to use his bulk and power to overcome opponents. At the same time, his ability to shed blockers is remarkable, as demonstrated by a lethal spin move that resulted in numerous sacks.
There is potential for expansion. Schuler needs to develop his speed, and although his strength is a good foundation, gaining more weight will be crucial at the next level. However, the basis is in place. With the right development—and training from DeLattiboudere, Rossi, and Fitzgerald—the path to success is established.
