BYU football has acquired a 3-star corner from New Jersey who may be the greatest corner recruit in program history in the current era. I’d like to introduce you to Ryan Wooten. In the very near future, you’ll hear his name frequently on Saturdays in Provo.

He was a swift, twitchy, and incredibly athletic playmaker in high school who devoured errant passes like Kirby in Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Just one glance at his offers list should be plenty to get football flowing through your veins. Programs such as Nebraska, Washington, Florida, Texas A&M, and James Franklin’s Virginia Tech team were all heavily involved in Wooten’s recruiting process, making his addition to BYU football a significant recruiting triumph for Kalani Sitake and newly promoted Kelly Poppinga. Even without Jay Hill calling plays from the booth, the Cougars are attracting major defensive prospects and maintaining key players from last year’s squad.

It makes me want to watch football games with the Wasatch Mountains in the background.

Yes, baseball is the sport to watch now that the Utah Mammoth have been eliminated from the playoffs, but with football season approaching soon (we’re approaching the 100 days to kickoff mark), pledges like these get me thrilled for fall air and the sound of the loudspeakers in LaVell Edwards Stadium.

Also noteworthy is the fact that Ryan Wooten is the first BYU football commitment from the Garden State since the turn of the century, which is ludicrous.

Wooten is ranked as the 52nd-best cornerback and the 17th-best player in New Jersey by 247 Sports. Do not be surprised if he takes the field and begins earning first-team repetitions sooner rather than later. Wooten hopes to compete for the Big 12 Conference title this season, and he will bring depth to an already strong secondary.
