Following a difficult season, Luton Town’s board says the Hatters have “rediscovered the identity that defines this club,” and that the groundwork has been established for a rebound after their disappointment at missing out on the playoffs.

Despite missing out on the top six on the final day of the League One season, the Hatters finished the season with an 11-game undefeated streak that included their best run of victories since their Conference-winning season, a sense of renewed optimism, supported by a remarkable transformation in form and a stronger bond between players, staff, and supporters.

In a statement issued following Saturday’s 3-2 victory against Bolton Wanderers, the board emphasized the significance of regaining their character in their evaluation of the season.

“The second half of the season, in particular, has provided us with tremendous optimism, which was eventually rewarding, if a bit too late. Together, we rediscovered the identity that distinguishes this club: hard work, togetherness, humility, and faith,” according to a statement.

That feeling of identity has been built throughout what the board termed as a “testing” and “challenging” campaign, which has fallen short of their ultimate goal of promotion but has seen the club get closer together in the final two months.

“Confirmation on Saturday that our 2025/26 season has come to an end gives us an opportunity to reflect on a campaign that has tested us, challenged us, and finally united us, reminding us all of exactly what Luton Town Football Club stands for,” the board’s statement read.

“Missing out on the League One play-offs on the final day is understandably disappointing, but it does not detract from the endurance demonstrated during a comeback campaign and the eventual progress made as foundations continue to be reinforced or reorganised across every area of the club. “

While the disappointment of missing out remained, the board highlighted the team’s late-season form as strong proof of advancement, with one defeat in their final 17 matches in all tournaments and a Vertu Trophy victory at Wembley providing tangible benefits.

“The team and staff’s dedication, performance, and perseverance in recent months have proved that we are heading in the right direction and building genuine momentum into next season,” according to the statement.

Manager Jack Wilshere has been instrumental in the club’s resurgence, and the board commended him for navigating his first managerial position while instilling faith throughout the club.

The statement further said: “Jack deserves tremendous credit for our recovery in the second half of the season, which was his first managerial position. He has done an outstanding job in striking a balance between his own footballing concepts and the realities of League One football, which he has done with great flair.

“He will, however, be the first to acknowledge the contribution of his players and support staff, who have come together during what was a difficult moment when he first arrived to ensure we end the season reflecting favorably on the 2025/26 campaign. “

The unity mentioned throughout the statement was perhaps best exemplified by the scenes at full-time at Bolton, where players and fans joined together in celebration despite the disappointment of missing out on the play-offs due to Stevenage’s contentious late winner in their match against Wigan.

“The scenes at the full-time whistle following our comeback victory over Bolton Wanderers on Saturday demonstrated the strong affinity that exists between this club, this manager and his staff, this team, and our supporters – something that will be critical to maintain as we seek to carry momentum throughout the summer and into the 2026/27 season. “

Looking forward, the board stated unequivocally that while the existing team is good, more improvements would be required to maintain development and provide a more difficult challenge next season.

“Looking ahead, there is a genuine faith in the nucleus of the existing team running alongside a recognition that further refreshing is still required. With the proper support and additions, we should be competitive in League One next season,” they said.

The board also emphasized its unwavering commitment to long-term planning, emphasizing the value of infrastructure projects such as the planned transfer to Power Court, with stadium development scheduled to be visible this summer.

“We are committed to preserving the stability of Luton Town while also investing in the infrastructure, individuals, and environment required for long-term success. Indeed, Power Court is the crucial element that will propel the club’s future ambitions,” the statement read.

There was also a recognition that lessons must be learnt from the slim margins that have characterized recent seasons.

“Over the previous two campaigns, a total of one point plus a few goals have made the difference between success and failure on two occasions,” the board stated. We can’t wait until it’s too late or rely on chance, if at all possible.

The statement ended with thanks to supporters who have maintained unwavering support throughout the campaign’s successes and setbacks.

“In difficult and positive moments alike, that unity has carried us forward, and in recent weeks, that patience has been rewarded with some truly unforgettable away days.

“We have had tremendous highs and tragic lows in recent years, but we go into the summer united, proud of what has been recovered, encouraged by the momentum we have created, and completely focused on the next chapter. “
