Lane Kiffin, LSU’s football head coach, spoke on quitting Ole Miss in a recent Vanity Fair article that took the sports world by storm, citing the school’s inability to distance itself from Civil War symbolism. In his first offseason with the LSU football program, Kiffin apologized to the institution where he previously worked.

Specifically, the story would state that Kiffin “also appears eager to indirectly allude to Ole Miss’ attempts to separate itself from symbols such as the Confederate flag, Colonel Rebel, and the moniker ‘Ole Miss’ itself. ” Kiffin apologized for any offense caused by his comments, but he did not retract them since the diversity narrative is widespread.

“Ole Miss has been wonderful to me and my family. I was questioned about recruiting disparities, and I told a story about how we had to fight some out-of-state Black parents and grandparents who did not want their children to relocate to Mississippi. Coaches have been battling that story for a long time. It wasn’t calculated to bring it up,” Kiffin told Pete Nakos.

Lane Kiffin’s initial statements about Ole Miss and LSU football

According to Kiffin’s Vanity Fair interview, his decision was based on recruiting, as he recalled cases in which Ole Miss’ location in relation to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was a dealbreaker. He would even note in the piece that he ‘hopes’ the remark “comes across respectful” to the school.

“Hey, coach, we really like you. However, my grandparents will not allow me to relocate to Oxford, Mississippi. ‘ “That does not come up when you mention Baton Rouge, Louisiana,” Kiffin remarked. “Parents were sitting here this weekend remarking how wonderful the campus’s diversity feels: “It feels like there’s no segregation. And we want that for our children because that is the real world. ‘”

“There are some things I’m stating that are true, not shots,” Kiffin said.

At any rate, Lane Kiffin will begin his new adventure as a head coach in college football with the LSU Tigers this season.
