Fulham and Coventry City have opened talks over a potential move for Aston Villa midfielder Ross Barkley, following uncertainty surrounding his long-term future at Villa Park.
The experienced midfielder has entered the final year of his Aston Villa contract, with no agreement yet reached over an extension. After playing a limited role under Unai Emery over the past two Premier League seasons, Barkley could be set for a fresh challenge this summer.
During the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, the former England international made 21 appearances but played just 852 minutes, scoring three goals and providing one assist. In the previous season, he featured even less, accumulating only 567 minutes across all competitions.
Despite his reduced role, Emery has previously praised Barkley’s performances. Following Aston Villa’s win over Leicester City in 2024, the Spaniard said:
“Today I am also very happy with Ross Barkley. He was fantastic in the minutes he played.”
Injuries have significantly affected Barkley’s time at Villa. A knee injury sidelined him for 14 matches during the 2025-26 season, while two separate injury setbacks caused him to miss 21 games in the 2024-25 campaign.
Although his recent injury record may raise concerns, Fulham and newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City remain interested in signing the 32-year-old. Both clubs are reportedly in discussions as they assess the possibility of bringing the former Chelsea and Everton midfielder to their squads ahead of the new season.
With his contract nearing its end and first-team opportunities limited at Aston Villa, Barkley’s future is expected to be one to watch during the summer transfer window.
