San Francisco 49ers HC Kyle Shanahan Suggests Lions QB Jared Goff Hasn’t Really improved

Jared Goff is posting the best stats of his career this season.
His 33 touchdown passes, 71.4% completion rate, and 112.2 passer rating are all personal bests. Goff appears tougher, more confident, and more accurate than during his Rams tenure.

However, he’s benefiting from the league’s top offensive line, an elite run game, receivers, and playcaller. His overall supporting cast has improved significantly.

On Saturday, I asked Kyle Shanahan about Goff’s growth in Detroit. His response was unexpected.

“It’s tough for any quarterback to succeed without a good situation,” Shanahan said. “I thought Goff was incredible with the Rams. During their Super Bowl run, he was nearly MVP-level. I know his numbers dipped in the following seasons, but when his team is strong, he’s as good as any quarterback. He was tough to beat in L.A. and now with Detroit, I could say he’s even better, but he was already that good before. It’s been an impressive comeback, and I’m glad to see it.”

Shanahan’s comments may seem like criticism, suggesting Goff isn’t elite without an elite team. But that applies to most quarterbacks, including Shanahan’s own — Brock Purdy.

Swap Goff’s name for Purdy’s, and Shanahan’s remarks still ring true.
