The Detroit Lions’ Week 18 clash with the Minnesota Vikings may prove critical, and linebacker Alex Anzalone is working hard to be available for the important matchup. However, the final call on whether the veteran will play will be made at the last minute.

Working with Medical Staff

On Thursday, Anzalone addressed the decision-making process, stressing that he and the medical team will decide together. He highlighted the need to weigh the risks with the trainers and doctors as he recovers from a broken forearm.

“The doctors and trainers discuss the risks,” Anzalone said. “It’s about waiting a week or two, practicing, and deciding whether to play this week or the next.”

Anzalone’s Personal Considerations: Is It Worth the Risk?

For Anzalone, the choice hinges on his personal assessment. He admitted he is contemplating the risks of returning and how it could impact his chances of playing in future games, including the Super Bowl.

“Personally, I think, ‘If something happens, can I accept missing the Super Bowl?’” Anzalone reflected. “That’s the internal debate – is it worth it, and how do I feel after practice?”

Evaluating the Injury: Is He Ready to Play?

Having missed six weeks of practice, Anzalone recognizes the limitations of protecting his forearm. Though reinforced with a steel plate, he remains unsure if his arm can endure full-contact play.

While he practiced fully on Thursday, the session wasn’t in pads, preventing a true test of his readiness. “I haven’t tackled anyone yet,” he noted. “I’ve done drills to mimic it, but it’s not the same.”

The Key Factor: How Does Anzalone Feel?

As the final practices approach, Anzalone is focused on how his arm responds. “It’s really about how I feel,” he said.

With the game’s significance in mind, Anzalone is committed to contributing but also cautious about ensuring he’s prepared for the challenges ahead. His availability for the Vikings game will likely be determined in the coming days.
