Earlier this season, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed how much he was appreciating the remaining time with his current coaching staff. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn are both expected to become head coaches eventually. As this year’s hiring cycle begins, both Johnson and Glenn are receiving heavy interest for interviews, as anticipated.
Glenn has four interviews scheduled this week. With the Lions on a bye, assistant coaches from the two playoff teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs, can conduct virtual head coaching interviews from Wednesday to the following Monday.
While Glenn was already a strong candidate, his defensive scheme that shut down the Minnesota Vikings in Week 18 further strengthened his case. Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton, who worked with Glenn during his time with the New Orleans Saints (2016-2020), highlighted Sunday’s game as an ideal showcase for Glenn.
Sean Payton on Lions DC Aaron Glenn:
“The best interview Aaron Glenn could give was during those three hours last night. There’s nothing more impressive to a GM or owner than that game.”
Dan Campbell continues to advocate for Aaron Glenn as he pursues head coaching roles. In the past, Campbell has strongly endorsed Glenn, though the Lions’ defensive struggles may have previously affected Glenn’s chances. However, this season, Glenn’s ability to manage through key injuries has shifted the narrative.
During a Tuesday press conference, Campbell passionately promoted Glenn to teams considering him.
“Aaron Glenn is one of the best coaches you’ll find, and an even better person,” Campbell said. “If no one hires him, I’ll gladly keep him. But it’s absurd to think he’s not a head coach yet. He excels in all areas—game management, communication, discipline, and motivation. I’d hate to lose him, but I root for him because he’s outstanding.”
While Campbell would happily retain Glenn for a fifth season, he firmly believes Glenn deserves a head coaching role. He even called it ridiculous if Glenn isn’t hired during this cycle.
