A business owner in Royal Oak has proposed renaming Campbell Road to Dan Campbell Road to honor the Detroit Lions head coach ahead of the team’s playoff run. Campbell Road stretches from 14 Mile Road to I-696 in Royal Oak and was originally named after metro Detroit landowner Welcome Campbell. Kristopher Powell, the business owner behind the idea, believes it’s time for a change, especially given the remarkable season the Lions are having under Coach Dan Campbell’s leadership.
Powell suggested that the road’s name would be a perfect tribute, and his proposal is gaining support, particularly from those working along Campbell Road, like HRPro employee Nick George, who sees it as an uplifting gesture. Powell hopes to honor Coach Campbell’s efforts in transforming the Lions into a competitive team.
However, the idea might not move forward immediately. City Manager Joseph Gacioch noted that the proposal faces challenges, including the existence of a Campbell Road in Madison Heights, and the logistical and financial implications, such as updating addresses for local businesses and residents, which could cost around $10,000. Although the proposal has been submitted, it will ultimately be up to the city commission to decide, with a potential temporary change in case the Lions win the Super Bowl, a hope that Powell and many others share.
