The Detroit Lions enter the 2025 offseason with one of the league’s top rosters, leaving them with few areas to address. However, there is a clear need to bolster their edge rusher depth and find a long-term starter to complement Aidan Hutchinson, as veteran Za’Darius Smith, now 32, is under contract for only one more year.
To fill this void, The Athletic’s Dane Brugler projects the Lions selecting Texas A&M edge rusher Nic Scourton late in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Brugler highlights Scourton’s relentless motor, which wears down blockers, making him an ideal fit for head coach Dan Campbell, a former Texas A&M player himself.
Scourton recorded five sacks and 36 pressures in 2024, with his standout season coming in 2023, where he achieved a career-best 10 sacks. Over his college career, Scourton totaled 17 sacks. In addition to his pass-rushing ability, The Draft Network’s Keith Sanchez praised Scourton’s strong run defense, labeling him a “winning starter” with Day 2 draft value.
“Nic Scourton is a powerful edge rusher who consistently sets the edge against the run while making a significant impact rushing the quarterback,” Sanchez wrote.
Although some experts view Scourton as a Day 2 pick, the Lions might prioritize securing him late in Round 1 if he fits their vision. With Smith returning in 2025, Scourton could initially serve as depth, allowing him time to develop.
If Scourton thrives in the starting role opposite Hutchinson, the Lions could solidify their edge positions for years to come, ensuring long-term success at a crucial spot.
