Following an impressive 2024 NFL season, the Detroit Lions suffered a disappointing playoff loss to the Washington Commanders. The defeat was devastating for a team widely considered a strong contender for a Super Bowl run.

As the offseason begins, it’s evident the Lions need to make improvements to solidify their championship aspirations.

One major area to address is their defensive secondary.

Despite having considerable defensive talent, Detroit could benefit from adding a cover cornerback. An intriguing name has surfaced as a potential solution for this need.

Lions Eye Key Player from New York Jets

Tyler Brooke of The 33rd Team identified New York Jets cornerback D.J. Reed as an ideal free-agent fit for the Lions.

“Though he didn’t record any interceptions in 2024, Reed limited quarterbacks to a 58.3% completion rate when targeting him. Over the last four seasons, he hasn’t allowed a completion percentage above 61.4,” Brooke noted.

“Reed’s No. 1 lockdown potential makes him an excellent replacement for the Lions, who are set to lose Carlton Davis and Khalil Dorsey in free agency. Detroit has the cap space to make a move, and pairing Reed with rookie Terrion Arnold could create a formidable duo.”

Reed appeared in 14 games for the Jets during the 2024 season, registering 64 tackles, a sack, and 11 passes defended.

At 28, a fresh start could benefit Reed. Despite his elite talent, he found himself in a difficult position with an underperforming Jets team.

The prospect of returning to New York might be more appealing now that Aaron Glenn is the Jets’ new head coach. However, the Detroit Lions remain an exciting option for Reed.

Expect the Lions to make waves this offseason as they aggressively chase a championship. Don’t be surprised if Reed becomes a top target.
