The Detroit Lions face significant decisions regarding their defensive line during the 2025 NFL offseason. Following a season marred by injuries in 2024, the defensive front has several players heading toward free agency, with a few others potentially on the chopping block. As the line may undergo substantial changes, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell suggests that the Lions should prioritize retaining familiar talent during the offseason. In his piece on how each NFL playoff team should handle departing free agents and cuts, Barnwell highlighted defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike as a key player for the Lions to focus on. “After stepping up due to injuries, Onwuzurike recorded 13 knockdowns while filling various roles along the line, except at the true zero-technique nose position. He missed all of 2022 after spinal fusion surgery, and his medical history might impact his free-agent market. However, he’s proven to be a valuable rotational pass rusher, and with Aidan Hutchinson needing more support, the Lions still require additional secondary rushers.” With Alim McNeil returning from injury and D.J. Reader potentially on the way out, retaining Onwuzurike may be essential for the Lions. His growth in 2024 suggests he could form a strong partnership with McNeil once healthy. If the Lions decide to release Reader, they should consider reallocating the savings to Onwuzurike, maintaining some continuity in a defensive overhaul that is likely coming.
