The Detroit Lions enter the offseason with few major roster concerns, but one position that could use reinforcement is wide receiver.
Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams remain the team’s top options, with Williams coming off his best season yet. However, beyond them, the depth chart is uncertain.
Kalif Raymond is under contract but may not be the ideal No. 3 receiver. Tim Patrick, who filled that role effectively in 2024, is set to hit free agency, as is Allen Robinson, who had minimal production last season. While the Lions should consider re-signing Patrick, they might also explore other options if he signs elsewhere
Richard Silva of The Detroit News suggests that Detroit could target Brandin Cooks, a pending free agent from the Dallas Cowboys. Although 2024 was the least productive season of Cooks’ career, several factors contributed to that. He missed seven games due to a knee injury, and by the time he returned, starting quarterback Dak Prescott was sidelined for the season.
Prior to last year, Cooks had reached at least 550 receiving yards in each of his first ten NFL seasons, surpassing 1,000 yards as recently as 2021. While his prime years may be behind him, he has consistently been a reliable option throughout his career, playing for five different teams. Additionally, Lions offensive coordinator John Morton coached Cooks during his time with the Saints in 2015-16, providing a potential connection.
Silva highlights that despite Cooks’ decline in production, the circumstances surrounding his season must be considered. His age is a concern, as he will turn 32 in September, and his numbers have been trending downward since his last 1,000-yard season in 2021.
However, if Detroit signs him, he wouldn’t be expected to carry a heavy workload. With St. Brown and Williams leading the receiving corps, Cooks would likely slot in as the third or even fourth receiving option, especially if Patrick returns.
According to Spotrac, Cooks is projected to command a one-year, $5.2 million contract. The Lions may be hesitant to spend that much unless they need to replace Patrick.
After dealing with depth issues in 2024, Detroit must be mindful of having enough reliable pass catchers. If Patrick departs, Cooks could be a logical addition to bolster their receiving unit in 2025.
