Everton player Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was furious with the decision to deny the Blues a penalty while they were 3-2 up against Manchester City in Monday night’s tumultuous encounter, claiming that it demonstrates that the Premier League is now a complete free-for-all in terms of set-piece contact.
Everton were leading 3-1 at Hill Dickinson Stadium with the game in the 87th minute thanks to a brace from Thierno Barry and a Jake O’Brien header in a remarkable 13-minute burst, only for Erling Haaland to promptly make it 3-2 when they were awarded a corner as they sought for another goal.
City captain Bernardo Silva fought with Merlin Rohl just before the corner was taken, pulling the Blues midfielder to the ground.
Referee Michael Oliver did not issue a penalty for the occurrence, and VAR did not believe it warranted a spot kick.
After Jeremy Doku scored his second goal of the game to tie City in the seventh minute of stoppage time, a furious Dewsbury-Hall took to Instagram to blame the Silva challenge.
Dewsbury-Hall posted on his Story, “Looking at the ball,” along with two photos of Silva struggling with Rohl while clearly not looking at the ball. The post was also accompanied by the walk-on theme for WWE star Brock Lesnar.
