Jared Goff shares thoughts on Ben Johnson’s departure and John Morton as new OC
Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff spoke publicly about the departure of former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and the promotion of John Morton to the role of OC.
With significant changes in the Detroit Lions’ coaching staff expected in 2025, most players are on break, so their reactions to these changes won’t be clear until the offseason workouts begin, unless they appear on podcasts. However, Goff, who was in Florida for the Pro Bowl, took the opportunity to share his initial thoughts with the SiriusXM NFL crew.
Goff had a close relationship with Johnson, so he was disappointed to see him leave, especially to join the Chicago Bears as their head coach within the same division.
“He’s a hell of a coach. He’s a guy that’s made a ton of difference in my career,” Goff said. “I’m obviously a big fan of his. I was joking with him. I wish he didn’t have to be in our division so I didn’t have to try to beat him twice a year, but, no, he’s going to do a great job. Hopefully, not too good, though, with us being in the division together. But, I’ll always be a fan of his, and we’ll always have a good relationship.”
Regarding his new offensive coordinator, John Morton, Goff has previous experience working with him. Morton served as the Lions’ senior offensive assistant in 2022 when Detroit implemented a new offense under Johnson. Goff didn’t provide a detailed assessment but expressed confidence in Morton’s abilities.
“We were together in 2022, he was an assistant on our staff, and has done it before,” Goff said. “He’s been a coordinator before, has a lot of experience in our league, been around a lot of great coaches. I’m excited to work with him and see where we can go.”
Although the Lions’ new coaches have not yet spoken to the media, it’s expected that Detroit will make them available during the NFL Combine week, which takes place from February 27 to March 2.
