Detroit Lions offensive assistant coach Dan Skipper found himself in an unexpected situation during Tuesday’s mandatory minicamp after stepping in to help break up a heated altercation between players on the practice field.
Earlier in the day, head coach Hank Fraley jokingly shared the first piece of advice he gave Skipper following his transition from longtime Lions offensive lineman to assistant coach.
“First rule I gave to Skip was, ‘No fighting coaches, and no fighting players,'” Fraley said with a laugh before practice.
Ironically, that message became relevant less than an hour later.
Detroit Lions Practice Turns Heated
According to reports from minicamp, tensions boiled over during walkthrough drills when reserve offensive tackle Devin Cochran and rookie defensive end Anthony Lucas became entangled following a play.
What initially appeared to be routine post-play contact quickly escalated into a verbal confrontation before both players began throwing punches after the whistle.
The situation intensified moments later when Lucas appeared to engage with another player, prompting Cochran to run across the field and continue the altercation.
Several Lions coaches and players immediately rushed in to separate those involved, with Skipper among the first to intervene and help restore order.
Dan Skipper Quickly Steps In
Despite Fraley’s humorous pre-practice warning, Skipper played peacemaker rather than participant during the incident.
The former offensive lineman helped calm the situation before it escalated further, ensuring the altercation remained a brief interruption during Detroit’s offseason workouts.
While fights are never ideal, emotions can occasionally run high during minicamp as players compete for roster spots and attempt to impress coaches ahead of training camp.
Both Cochran and Lucas are fighting for opportunities on a talented Detroit roster, making every practice rep important as they look to secure their futures with the organization.
Fortunately for the Lions, coaches and teammates quickly defused the situation before it became a larger issue.
And for Skipper, he managed to follow Fraley’s instructions perfectly—by breaking up the fight instead of joining it.
