The Detroit Lions are entering the 2026 NFL season with confidence, and star running back Jahmyr Gibbs believes the team is already ahead of schedule.

After an offseason focused on strengthening both the offensive and defensive lines, Detroit appears determined to reestablish itself as a contender in the NFC North. If Gibbs can build on his outstanding 2025 campaign, the Lions could once again be one of the conference’s most dangerous teams.

Speaking after the conclusion of mandatory minicamp, Gibbs delivered a bold assessment of where Detroit stands heading into training camp.

“The whole team is doing great. We’re so far ahead of where we were last year at this time. Everybody’s playing fast,” Gibbs told ESPN. “Everybody knows what to do. It feels like we’re almost in season form.”

Those comments should grab the attention of division rivals like the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers, as the Lions appear to be operating with a level of confidence and continuity rarely seen this early in the offseason.

Jahmyr Gibbs Coming Off Career-Best Season

Gibbs emerged as the centerpiece of Detroit’s offense in 2025, producing one of the best all-around seasons by a running back in the NFL. He rushed for 1,223 yards and 13 touchdowns on 243 carries while adding 77 receptions for 616 yards and five scores as a receiver.

With veteran running back David Montgomery no longer on the roster following his offseason departure, Gibbs is expected to take on an even larger role in the Lions’ offense. Detroit hopes the addition of Isiah Pacheco will help maintain a strong rushing attack while allowing Gibbs to remain a dynamic dual-threat weapon.

New Offensive Coordinator Already Making an Impact

The Lions also enter 2026 with a new offensive leader after hiring Drew Petzing as offensive coordinator. According to Gibbs, Petzing has quickly earned the respect of Detroit’s players.

“He’s smart. He’s demanding of us, but he knows we can do it,” Gibbs said. “He puts a lot on our plate, but like I said, he knows we can do it.”

Petzing will work alongside head coach Dan Campbell and passing game coordinator Mike Kafka as Detroit looks to keep one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses operating at a high level.

Lions Looking Ready for Another NFC North Run

While training camp remains weeks away, Gibbs’ comments suggest the Lions are already building momentum. Detroit’s players appear comfortable with the new coaching staff and confident in the team’s direction.

If that confidence translates to the field this fall, the Lions could once again be a major threat in the NFC North—and Gibbs’ message may serve as an early warning shot to the rest of the division.
