After an impressive 15-2 season—their best in the Super Bowl era—the Detroit Lions still fell short of reaching the big game, exiting in the Divisional Round. Now, with both their offensive and defensive coordinators departing, Detroit faces the challenge of building an even stronger team to push deeper into the playoffs. One potential solution? Bringing in experienced players who have succeeded in high-pressure postseason moments.

Could Detroit Use Jared Goff’s Connection to Acquire Cooper Kupp?

The Lions already boast a dynamic receiving group featuring two-time All-Pro Amon-Ra St. Brown and former first-round pick Jameson Williams, along with standout tight end Sam LaPorta. However, there’s still room for improvement, particularly at the No. 3 receiver spot, previously held by Tim Patrick, who is set to hit free agency.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Detroit could be a potential landing spot for Cooper Kupp, a former All-Pro wide receiver the Los Angeles Rams may be looking to trade. Kupp and Lions quarterback Jared Goff have a well-established rapport, having spent four seasons together in Los Angeles.

Fowler noted that multiple teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Washington Commanders, and New England Patriots, could pursue Kupp, but also suggested the Lions as a possible destination, citing Goff’s pre-existing chemistry with the receiver. He also mentioned that the Kansas City Chiefs could make a move for Kupp as well.

Financial Considerations in a Potential Kupp Trade

Kupp, who signed a three-year, $80 million contract extension in 2022, remains under contract for two more seasons. His cap hit in 2025 is projected at $29.7 million unless restructured.

While acquiring Kupp makes sense for Detroit, the team would need to compete with several other franchises interested in adding the former Super Bowl MVP to their roster. If the Lions can make a strong enough offer, Kupp could help elevate their offense to an elite level in their pursuit of a championship.
