The Detroit Lions’ 2024 draft class received unfavorable evaluations in a recent NFL.com ranking of teams’ first-year players. The Lions’ class was rated 28th out of 32 teams, earning a C- grade. Only the Chiefs, Bills, Vikings, and Browns had worse ratings.
Detroit’s rookies faced a challenging situation due to the team’s experienced roster, which limited opportunities for early playing time. Cornerback Terrion Arnold and offensive lineman Christian Mahogany were among the players who earned significant snaps as starters. Other rookies, including Sione Vaki, Ennis Rakestraw, and Mekhi Wingo, had chances to showcase their abilities, but injuries hindered their opportunities for further impact.
Giovanni Manu, another rookie, spent the season inactive and is considered a developmental player with potential to become a dependable offensive lineman. NFL analyst Gennaro Filice noted that, while the Lions’ draft class was overshadowed by injuries, it was tough to evaluate the players’ performances fully. He pointed out that, like the Eagles, the Lions drafted cornerbacks in the first two rounds, but their returns were not as immediate or impactful.
Rakestraw Jr.’s season was limited by injuries, which made it difficult to assess his potential. Meanwhile, Arnold faced a steep learning curve, especially during the first month of the season, when he struggled with penalties. Despite the growing pains, many analysts expect Arnold to show significant improvement in his second year. In his rookie season, Arnold led the league in man-coverage snaps, with former defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn trusting him to play press coverage despite being a rookie.
Coach Dan Campbell intends to continue with man-coverage defense, and new defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard is expected to design a defense tailored to the needs of the younger players. Filice expressed optimism about Arnold’s future, noting that if he retains the confidence he demonstrated during the draft, he could make a major leap in his second season.
Looking ahead to 2025, Mahogany is expected to secure a starting role, and Sheppard will have the opportunity to shape a defense suited for the team’s youngest players. Beyond the top picks, notable contributions came from Christian Mahogany, who impressed during a few spot starts, including a postseason game, and Sione Vaki, a versatile player who earned recognition as a special teamer on the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
