Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently acknowledged the significant impact that new Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson had on his career, especially during their time together in Detroit. Campbell shared his thoughts during a media session at the NFL combine on February 25. Despite Johnson’s success in elevating his own career, Campbell emphasized that Johnson was equally instrumental in his own growth as a coach.
Under Campbell’s leadership, the Lions clinched the NFC North Division title for two consecutive years, reaching the championship game in 2023 and securing the top playoff seed for 2024. In 2022, the team finished with a 9-8 record. Johnson served as the Lions’ offensive coordinator throughout this successful stretch, while Aaron Glenn, the defensive coordinator, stayed in his role for the entirety of Campbell’s tenure. Both Johnson and Glenn took head coaching roles this offseason, with Johnson joining the Chicago Bears and Glenn heading to the New York Jets.
When reflecting on their departures, Campbell shared the message he sent to both Johnson and Glenn, emphasizing the importance of hiring the right staff as head coaches. “I told Ben Johnson and AG that the most crucial task you’ll face as a head coach is assembling your staff,” Campbell remarked.
Johnson has already made key hires for his new coaching staff. He tapped Dennis Allen, the former head coach of the New Orleans Saints, as his defensive coordinator. For the offensive coordinator role, Johnson chose 28-year-old Declan Doyle, previously the tight ends coach with the Denver Broncos under Sean Payton. Doyle will support Johnson in formulating the offensive strategy, though Johnson will take the lead in calling plays.
Additionally, Richard Hightower, the lone remaining coordinator from the Matt Eberflus era, will continue overseeing the Bears’ special teams. Johnson also bolstered his staff by hiring former NFL wide receiver Antwaan Randel El as the assistant head coach and wide receivers coach, along with former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy to coach running backs. Former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett will serve as the quarterbacks coach.
