Kacy Rodgers, the team’s new defensive line coach, is widely respected in the NFL for his ability to develop defensive fronts. While coaching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ defensive line, their unit consistently ranked in the league’s top third in sacks each season.
Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles spoke highly of Rodgers at the NFL Combine, emphasizing his deep understanding of the game. “He’s an outstanding coach who knows football inside and out. We’ve worked together for years, and he’s like a brother to me,” Bowles said. “He and Dan [Campbell] already have a connection from their time in Dallas and Miami, so he’ll fit in well. Detroit is getting a smart, tough, and disciplined coach.”
Rodgers and Lions head coach Dan Campbell share a history, having both spent time with the Cowboys in the early 2000s when Campbell was still playing. Additionally, they were part of the Miami Dolphins coaching staff at the same time.
“I know how he operates and the impact he has on a defensive line,” Campbell said at the Combine. “When I saw there was an opportunity to bring him in, it made perfect sense. He’ll be a great addition to our defensive front.”
The Lions’ defensive line is anchored by Aidan Hutchinson, and the team may look to add another pass rusher in the upcoming draft.
Campbell believes Rodgers’ work ethic and ability to connect with players make him a perfect fit for Detroit’s culture.
“I think Aidan Hutchinson and the rest of the guys will really respect him and be drawn to his coaching style,” Campbell said. “He’s one of us—committed to doing things the right way, working hard, and refining the fundamentals.”
Detroit finished the 2024 season with 37 sacks, ranking 23rd in the league.
