Former Detroit Lions center Frank Ragnow is speaking publicly about his retirement, his unsuccessful attempt to return to the NFL, and where his relationship with the organization stands today.
After spending seven seasons with the Lions and earning three All-Pro selections, Ragnow made the difficult decision to retire in order to prioritize his long-term health. According to Ragnow, he spent months trying to convince himself that he could continue playing, but persistent physical issues made that impossible. He admitted that he wrestled with the decision and wanted to keep competing for his teammates, coaches, and fans.
The former Lions star explained that becoming a father also played a role in his thinking. While he believes he will be healthy moving forward, he reached a point where he had to ask whether continuing to play football was worth the physical toll.
Ragnow Reflects on Failed Lions Comeback Attempt
After retiring, Ragnow initially tried to stay away from football. However, watching the Lions struggle during the season made him consider a return.
He said seeing quarterback Jared Goff and the rest of his teammates battle through adversity motivated him to attempt a comeback. Ragnow hoped he could return and help Detroit make a playoff push.
Unfortunately, the comeback never materialized. He suffered an injury shortly before reporting back to the team and later failed his physical examination, ending any chance of returning to the field.
Looking back, Ragnow admitted he may have ignored what his body was telling him. Even so, he takes comfort in knowing that he made the effort to help the organization and its fans.

Questions about Ragnow’s relationship with the Lions surfaced after reports indicated that Detroit requested repayment of a portion of his signing bonus following his retirement.
Addressing the situation, Ragnow acknowledged the reports but chose not to dwell on the controversy. While he expressed disappointment that details became public, he emphasized that he still has tremendous respect for the people within the organization.
Ragnow said there are many individuals inside the Lions facility whom he deeply appreciates, and he continues to support the team from afar. Despite the circumstances surrounding his retirement, he made it clear that he remains grateful for his time in Detroit and is rooting for the franchise’s future success.
