Zachariah Branch, a Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver who is projected to be selected in the 2026 NFL draft, was detained less than a week before the draft in Athens, Georgia. Branch was back in town for Georgia’s annual spring game.
According to the Athens-Clarke County arrest report, he was apprehended early Sunday morning and charged at 1:26 a. m. ET. Branch was accused with obstructing public pathways (prowling) and interfering with a police officer.
The Georgia all-time leader in single-season receptions was freed at 3:44 a. m. ET after paying $39 bond. Both of Branch’s counts are misdemeanors.
The Athens police gave the Athens Banner-Herald a summary of the events that led to Branch’s detention.
Around 12:20 a. m. , as downtown businesses were closing, a large crowd gathered outside Cloud Bar. Despite the fact that the establishment was about to close for the night, people attempted to get entrance.
Officers on the scene gave several legitimate orders for the audience to evacuate the sidewalk. Officers directly addressed Zachariah Branch, urging him to depart. Mr. Branch declined to comply with these legitimate instructions.
As a result, Mr. Branch was arrested and charged with obstructing justice. He was also charged with interfering with a public walkway.
The timing of Branch’s arrest is a little worrisome for NFL clubs that are interested in him. However, based on the accusations, it is unlikely that many clubs would see this event as a red flag and be discouraged from selecting Branch.
Branch is expected to be picked in the second or third round of the 2026 NFL draft. His explosiveness and speed enable him to gain significant yards after the catch. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has ranked Branch among his favorite receivers in the draft.
The 2026 NFL Draft begins on Thursday, April 23 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
