Texas Tech football quarterback Brendan Sorsby, who excelled at Cincinnati for the previous two seasons, is quitting the Red Raiders program and entering a residential treatment center for gambling addiction.
The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, a member of the USA TODAY Network, reported on Monday, April 27 that the Red Raiders have confirmed Sorsby’s departure from the program.
According to ESPN, Sorsby is being investigated by the NCAA after making thousands of internet bets on a variety of sports using a gambling app — including bets on Indiana games during his true freshman season as a Hoosier in 2022.
According to ESPN, Sorsby’s wagers in 2022 were all on Indiana to win games and consisted of a constant stream of modest bets placed over time. The 6-foot-3 quarterback appeared in only one game for the Hoosiers as a substitute that season, a game in which he reportedly did not wager.
ESPN reports that Sorsby’s gambling activities have not piqued the interest of authorities.
Brendan Sorsby played at Indiana and Cincinnati before transferring to Texas Tech.
Sorsby played in seven games for the Hoosiers the following season before moving to Cincinnati. In 2023, he passed for 1,587 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Hoosiers. He spent the previous two seasons as the Bearcats’ starting quarterback, passing for a total of 5,613 yards and 45 touchdowns. He also had 18 rushing touchdowns in total.
Sorsby transferred to Texas Tech via the transfer portal last summer after being a highly sought-after recruit. Cincinnati sued Sorsby in late February, according to USA TODAY Sports. The Bearcats demanded Sorsby’s $1 million termination for breaking his multi-year NIL revenue-sharing deal, which he signed in July 2025.
