As the Detroit Lions gear up for the 2025–26 campaign, their roster has a mix of familiar faces and new changes. One of the biggest storylines out of training camp has been the uncertainty behind starter Jared Goff at quarterback. The concern is clear — if Goff were sidelined, Detroit lacks a dependable option to step in.

That concern grew louder when the Lions released Hendon Hooker, who had been serving as a backup for the past couple of seasons. His preseason struggles sealed his fate, and on August 26 the team decided to move on. Despite the setback, Hooker quickly landed on his feet with the Carolina Panthers, keeping his NFL career alive.

The decision didn’t exactly come out of left field. Head coach Dan Campbell had offered little indication over the past year that Hooker factored into Detroit’s long-term vision. The team also failed to find any trade partners willing to take him.

Dan Campbell’s Take on Hooker’s Departure

Prior to the release, Campbell hinted that a fresh start might be what Hooker needed.

“It always comes down to how much you think a player can still grow,” Campbell said during a press conference. “With Hendon, you ask yourself, does he still have room to develop? Or is it just time for a change of scenery? And then you weigh that against where we might need more depth — offensive line, defensive line, receiver, secondary. Those decisions aren’t easy.”

Hooker’s Message After Signing with Carolina

Now with the Panthers, Hooker addressed reporters about his move. In doing so, he made a subtle comment aimed at Detroit’s handling of him.

“I wanted to be somewhere I was valued,” Hooker explained. “Somewhere I could develop and keep learning. The coaching staff here really wanted me, and we already built a strong relationship during the draft process. It feels good to pick that back up, and I’m excited to grow under his leadership.”

Detroit Turns the Page

The Lions begin their regular season on September 7, 2025, when they host the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field. Green Bay, already considered Detroit’s biggest divisional rival, strengthened its roster with the addition of Micah Parsons from the Dallas Cowboys.

Parsons, a three-time Pro Bowler, welcomed the move. “Everything happens for a reason,” he said. “It feels like a blessing in disguise. Green Bay is the right place for me to take the next step and build on my legacy.”
