The Phoenix Suns’ head coaching opening was the subject of extensive conversations between Michigan State coach Tom Izzo and the team last summer, he revealed Wednesday.

Since Mat Ishbia, a former Michigan State basketball player, owns the Suns franchise, there is a connection between them and Izzo. He was a member of Michigan State’s National Championship squad in 2000 and played for Izzo.

In a Wednesday episode of the Dan Patrick Show, Izzo made the remarks.

“I’ve received several job offers in the NBA,” Izzo stated. “Looked at one last year with Phoenix and my former player Mat Ishbia. That was difficult. It was difficult to refuse that. First, because I wanted to go with him in a way… Let’s say we discussed it in a serious manner.

Secondly, I have been quite outspoken about my disapproval of the state of intercollegiate sports. Additionally, 99. 8% of the football and basketball coaches in the United States do not. Even before it’s over, I still think the youngsters will discover that it’s not in their best interests.

Jordan Ott was hired to fill the Suns’ vacancy, and Izzo, of course, stayed in East Lansing. Before falling to UConn, Michigan State paid another visit to the Sweet 16.

At Michigan State, Izzo is anticipated to make a comeback for the 2026–27 season.
