Wisconsin guard John Blackwell (25) is shown during the second half of their game Tuesday, November 11, 2025 at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin. Wisconsin beat Ball State 86-55.
The Wisconsin Badgers will have to replace their whole starting back court next season. Senior guard Nick Boyd has exhausted his NCAA eligibility and intends to enter the NBA Draft regardless. When the Badgers’ season ended (much too early), many anticipated that Wisconsin would be able to keep Boyd’s back court partner, junior guard John Blackwell.
Unfortunately, it was revealed on Monday morning that Blackwell will not return to the Badgers next season. He is not just going through the NBA pre-draft process, but he is also joining the NCAA transfer portal.
John Blackwell issues statement following his choice to leave the Wisconsin Badgers
Blackwell averaged 19. 1 points per game this season and was named to the 2025-26 All-Big Ten Team. For the second consecutive year, he was selected to the All-Big Ten Tournament Team.
Blackwell issued the following statement on Monday, after word of his choice was revealed:
“After much deliberation and prayer with my family, I want to inform you that I would not be returning to play for the Badgers next season. I intend to participate in the NBA Draft and the transfer portal as I look into all options to advance my career.
“This was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make since my time here has been nothing short of amazing. The effort I’ve put in, along with the advice and direction I’ve gained from Coach Gard and his team, has helped me mature into a player I didn’t think I could be. However, that growth is precisely what is prompting the move. I feel obligated to myself and my family to seek the greatest level I can achieve, and now is the time for me to take that step and have faith.
“My time in Madison has truly transformed my life. Badger Nation was steadfast in their support throughout every triumph and setback. I am extremely thankful and will always remember it.
“My hope is that you respect my decision. Madison will always be my second home for the rest of my life. This location and community will always be a part of me.
“Thank you for everything! “
