On Thursday, April 30, 2026, five-star international prospect Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje made a commitment to the Duke University men’s basketball program and head coach Jon Scheyer. The Blue Devils were chosen over rival North Carolina by the 7-foot center from the FC Barcelona youth system.
According to 247Sports, Boumtje Boumtje is a five-star prospect, standing 7 feet tall and weighing 230 pounds. The Spain-based center will be joining a Duke 2026 recruiting class that already includes some of the best candidates in the nation, like Cameron Williams, Deron Rippey Jr. , Bryson Howard, and Maxime Meyer.
The acquisition of the 16-year-old center is a clear triumph for Duke over Michael Malone, the first-year head coach at North Carolina. Boumtje Boumtje has a similar developmental trajectory to that of current Duke guard Dame Sarr, who made the move from the FC Barcelona club to the Blue Devils program.
Boumtje Boumtje joins Cayden Boozer, Patrick Ngongba II, and Caleb Foster as returning players on Duke’s squad for the 2026–27 campaign, which is still taking shape. The program has also increased its depth via the transfer portal with the addition of John Blackwell from Wisconsin and Drew Scharnowski from Belmont.
After a strong 2025-26 season that saw the team end with a 35-3 record, the Blue Devils are now entering the next recruitment cycle. Scheyer led Duke to win the regular season and tournament championships of the Atlantic Coast Conference before finishing the season with an appearance in the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament.
