The Memphis Grizzlies may finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.

According to seasoned NBA writer Jake Fischer, the Grizzlies are likely to find a “wider trade market” for their unhappy star point guard Ja Morant this summer. Fischer observes that Memphis is largely expected to resume its attempt to trade Morant in the coming weeks.

Morant, a two-time All-Star at 26, has been with the Grizzlies since they selected him with the No. 2 overall selection in 2019. However, after seven seasons together, all signals suggest that the two parties would split in the summer.

Memphis reportedly shopped Morant around extensively before to the trade deadline in February, but found little interest. It also did not help that Morant only played in 20 overall games owing to injury and was causing problems for the Grizzlies all year (including a team-imposed suspension for an event involving head coach Tuomas Iisalo).

The Grizzlies had a terrible 25-57 record in 2025-26 and have already traded away two key players, Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. , in the last year. Now even Morant himself, who is owed around $85 million over the next two seasons, appears to be putting pressure on Memphis to eventually trade him.

By waiting until the summer to make a deal, prospective teams will have more financial flexibility and one fewer season to pay out Morant’s deal. That may explain why two prominent new clubs have emerged as possible suitors for Morant in recent weeks.
