Frank Lampard has described how working with Pep Guardiola impacted his coaching career.

The Coventry City manager will still be relishing the sensation of leading the Sky Blues to the Championship championship. City led the table for the majority of the season and won the league by 11 points, bringing an end to the club’s 25-year absence from the top flight.

Lampard, however, has stated that his previous experiences as a player do not influence his coaching style. Instead, it was observing how Manchester City manager Guardiola worked that provided him with a eureka moment at the start of his managerial career.

“When you go into coaching, it is quite different from being a player,” Lampard told The Times. “I was profoundly influenced. I saw Pep for a few days. I was like, “Wow, he’s so dynamic in the center of the training pitch. ” And I went to see a few other managers, including Eddie Howe at one time.

“And then you sort of go, what does a manager look like? What do I wish to be? Do I want to be this tactical genius? How do I want to deal with the players? And then, once you complete it, you may actually complicate the situation in your mind.

“A lot of us are working in a different context than Pep. He deserves to be where he is, with this amazing team, because of the effort he has put in. But we must all find a different way.

“So attempting to play like I believe Pep would with this group would not necessarily work. So you have to know what you want to be. “

Lampard shot to prominence as a manager when he led Derby County to the Championship play-off final before returning to his previous club, Chelsea. In his first season at Stamford Bridge, he reached the FA Cup final and qualified for the Champions League before departing after 18 months in charge.

He then spent a year battling relegation with Everton before eventually returning to management with the Sky Blues in November 2024. Replacing the renowned Mark Robins was a difficult challenge, but Lampard was eager to demonstrate himself, driven by a fear of failure, something he acquired from his father, Frank Lampard Sr.

“It most likely stems from my upbringing with a hard father who was always very pushy with me: “You need to get faster, you need to do that, you won’t make it if you don’t,” he said. “That was probably ingrained in me. And then I had a mother who was always really modest and brought me down to earth with grace, but she also taught me manners, humility, and other virtues.

“So I think when you have those things, the modern world is going to present you a lot of challenges, and you’re very aware of them. I’ve also got a rather tough inner voice that says, “Well, I want to fight back. I want to show that I’m better than that. “‘ I believe I take that with me everywhere I go, no matter what the job is. ”
