Merseyside Police detained an Everton fan during his team’s match against Manchester City for reportedly making racist remarks directed at Antoine Semenyo.
The supporter was arrested during the Premier League match between the teams at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Monday, which concluded in a 3-3 tie.
According to police, a 71-year-old man from Nottinghamshire has been detained on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offense after supporters and stewards reported that a spectator hurled racial abuse.
According to police, an inquiry into the incident during the game is still underway, and they are working closely with Everton FC.
He has now been released on bail with restrictions, including not to approach within one mile of any predetermined sports stadium for up to four hours before kickoff, during the match, and for four hours following the game’s completion.
Everton stated in a statement that such behavior will not be tolerated.
Racism and discrimination in any form are totally unacceptable. The club stated that they have no place in our stadia, sport, or community.
The club will continue to collaborate closely with authorities to aid their probe and will take the most severe action possible in accordance with its zero-tolerance policy.
It is the second occasion that Ghana international Semenyo, 26, has been subjected to racial attacks this season.
Semenyo claimed to have been racially insulted by a spectator during his previous club Bournemouth’s 4-2 loss to Liverpool in the first Premier League game of this season.
Semenyo then stated that more should be done to address racism in football, including potential jail terms for people found guilty of abuse.
Manchester City lauded Everton and Merseyside Police for their quick action.
The club stated that England defender Marc Guehi, 25, also received internet racist abuse after the game.
We are really disappointed to learn that Marc Guehi was the target of a series of horrific racist social media posts last night, according to a City statement.
We will continue to fully support both Antoine and Marc, and we will never tolerate discrimination of any kind in our game.
