One of the most common complaints about the Detroit Lions’ 2026 schedule was the absence of a bye week following the team’s international game in Germany.

Now, the NFL has explained why it happened.

According to league authorities, the Lions’ management was fully aware of what it was getting into.

Lions worked hard for Germany. Game

During a conference call detailing the NFL scheduling procedure, league vice president of broadcast planning Mike North said that Detroit was eager for the opportunity to perform in Germany.

That support came from Lions president Rod Wood, the club, and even star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.

“We knew that the Germany game was going to be just two weeks before Thanksgiving, and it was important enough to Rod, to the organization, to our international people, certainly to your wide receiver that it made a lot of sense for the Lions to play in that Germany game,” North said (as quoted by Pride of Detroit).

Detroit will play the New England Patriots in Munich on Nov. 15 before returning home to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and then the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving Day, only 11 days later.

According to the NFL, Thanksgiving made scheduling difficult.
Many supporters believe the NFL failed to adequately defend Detroit after Germany. Bye week.

Apparently, that was never feasible.

North stated that the league was unlikely to schedule a bye week shortly after the Germany game since Detroit already had a short week built into its Thanksgiving match against Chicago.

Giving the Lions a week off before Thanksgiving while forcing the Bears to an even shorter turnaround was not considered a viable scheduling alternative.

Instead, according to reports, Detroit focused on avoiding another Thursday-to-Thursday return following Thanksgiving, something the squad had suffered the previous two years.

The request was granted.

“They were actually hoping to see that 10-day vacation after Thanksgiving as opposed to yet another Thursday to Thursday,” North told the media. “Credit to the team, really, for volunteering. ” They knew what they were getting into, and I believe it turned out as they had planned. ”

Buccaneers’ bye week presents another challenge

While Detroit may have tolerated the absence of a bye week following Germany, there is one element of the schedule that still seems cruel.

The Lions return from Munich to immediately face a rejuvenated Tampa Bay club that had a bye week.

Lions are not alone in losing after international goodbye.

That means the Buccaneers will be well-rested and prepared for Ford Field, while Detroit acclimates to foreign travel and a shorter schedule.

It forms one of the most difficult parts of Detroit’s whole 2026 schedule.

The good news for Detroit is that the majority of international clubs this season are facing similar situations.

Only three of the NFL’s 16 foreign participants reportedly had a bye week immediately after their game:

Jacksonville Jaguars.
New Orleans Saints
Patriots
New England most likely benefited from not performing on Thanksgiving.

So, while Lions supporters may disapprove with the scheduling framework, the NFL claims that Detroit willingly accepted the challenge.

The Lions will now have to demonstrate that they can endure one of the most difficult portions of their season.
