The Detroit Lions have spent the last few seasons developing one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses. Following the 2025 season’s disappointing performance, speculation is already swirling as to what general manager Brad Holmes can do to return the squad to Super Bowl contention.
One recent trade proposal sees Detroit making a bold move that would rock the league.
According to Fantasy Sports on Sports Illustrated’s fake trade proposal, the Lions would purchase star wide receiver A. J. Brown from the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a 2027 first-round pick, a 2027 second-round pick, and young cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
It’s a move that immediately catches attention. The more significant question is whether it makes sense for Detroit to exist.
Could A. J. Brown Make the Detroit Lions Offense Unstoppable?
There is no doubting what Brown would bring to Detroit’s offense.
The 28-year-old wide receiver is still one of the league’s most physical and effective players. Brown stands at 6’1″ and weighs more than 225 pounds. He is a genuine outside bully who can control disputed grabs and penalize defenses following the catch.
Brown, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, and running backs Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery would provide quarterback Jared Goff with one of the greatest arsenals in football.
On paper, it sounds awful for opposing defenses.
The Lions were already regarded as one of the NFL’s best offenses during their recent increase under coach Dan Campbell. Adding another great receiver may result in matchup nightmares across the board, making Detroit virtually impossible to defend in key situations.
The financial reality might be harsh.
As thrilling as the proposal sounds, there is a different aspect to this discussion.
Brown’s cap cost is estimated to be over $23 million, and Detroit has a number of large contract extensions planned. The Lions will soon be forced to make long-term decisions about LaPorta, Gibbs, and defensive star Brian Branch.
This hypothetical gets complicated.
Holmes has carefully created Detroit, focusing roster balance and long-term viability over flashy all-in moves. Trading a premium draft pick while also taking on another huge contract might force difficult decisions elsewhere on the squad.
Detroit’s front office has always emphasized drafting. Moving both a first and second round selection would indicate a major philosophical departure for a club that has heavily relied on its scouting department to produce young talent.
What Happened to Jameson Williams?
Williams is a key figure in this potential transaction.
The previous first-round pick continues to be one of the NFL’s most explosive deep threats. Every week, his pace changes defensive game strategies, even when he isn’t heavily targeted.
Brown would most likely step into the No. 2 position behind St. Brown right away. That may restrict Williams’ prospects and perhaps effect his long-term prospects in Detroit.
At the same time, it can be said that Brown’s physical approach would fit well with Williams. Brown excels in traffic and under coverage, whereas Williams stretches the field vertically. Together, they might form one of the NFL’s most balanced wide receiver pairings.
Still, touches and aims are important, particularly for a young player seeking to improve confidence and consistency.
Would Brad Holmes Really Pull the Trigger?
Under Holmes and Campbell, the Lions have never been hesitant to make bold decisions. During prior draughts, Detroit made bold trades for several players, showing a willingness to focus. Culture fits rather than public perception.
However, this scenario feels unusual.
Detroit’s existing lineup is already strong offensively, and the franchise clearly feels Williams has untapped potential. Giving up significant draft capital and a young defensive player like Rakestraw may be too expensive for a luxury acquisition.
Furthermore, the Lions’ most important concerns entering 2026 may not even be on offense. Defensive consistency and depth remain issues following injuries that highlighted flaws in the 2025 campaign.
Even so, fans are excited about the prospect of Brown receiving passes from Goff at Ford Field.
