After the hiring of head coach Lane Kiffin, who arrived from Ole Miss following a tumultuous exit, the LSU Tigers have been in the spotlight this offseason.

Kiffin’s exit, as well as the NCAA and college football schedules, have been scrutinized by fans, coaches, and administrators. Instead of leading Ole Miss into the College Football Playoff, Kiffin accepted the LSU job and was barred by the University of Mississippi from coaching the Rebels while under contract with another team.

However, Florida head coach Jon Sumrall, who was hired from Tulane previously this offseason, has stated that he would have handled things quite differently.

Jon Sumrall Explains His Remarks Not a jab at anybody, not even Lane Kiffin.

Sumrall was questioned during SEC Meetings whether he would have done things differently and coached Tulane during the College Football Playoff rather than getting the ball rolling in Florida.

Though he did not explicitly mention Kiffin, Sumrall’s response was clearly critical of what Kiffin did during his departure from Ole Miss.

Sumrall explained that he was not going to leave a squad competing for a championship to go coach another team. That’s not in my nature. I wasn’t designed that way. Couldn’t do it. I simply couldn’t.

Sumrall quickly realized that his remarks could be interpreted as a jab at Kiffin. He clarified that he was not speaking directly to anyone, but it once again demonstrates how differently other coaches throughout the country would have handled the situation.

No one is being attacked. Sumrall said, “It’s actually not. ” “I simply told Florida, or any other school considering me as their head coach, that if they wanted to tell me the conditions they needed to be on, the answer for me was, ‘I can’t take the job,'” he says. Sorry, I simply can’t do it since those youngsters gave me so much and it would be unfair.

LSU and Florida will seek to return to their former levels on the field, as Kiffin and Sumrall have joined new teams. Both teams needed a change of pace and received one last season with two midseason head coaching firings.

Kiffin’s departure is now history, and the Tigers are looking ahead to the 2026 season. It will be fascinating to watch how Sumrall and Kiffin perform against one another over the next few years, as both are beginning new jobs at the same time.
