The Detroit Lions are receiving positive news regarding one of the most important pieces of their offense as preparations continue for the 2026 season.

Star tight end Sam LaPorta, who suffered a season-ending back injury in Week 10 last year, appears to be progressing well in his recovery.

After participating on a limited basis during organized team activities (OTAs) and mandatory minicamp, LaPorta is trending toward being available when the Lions report for training camp later this summer.
Head coach Dan Campbell offered an encouraging update on the Pro Bowl tight end during Tuesday’s minicamp session.

“We like where he’s going,” Campbell said. “He’s trending the right way.”
LaPorta has become one of the most reliable weapons in Detroit’s offense since entering the NFL. Through his first three seasons, he has recorded 186 receptions and established himself as a trusted target for quarterback Jared Goff.

His breakout rookie campaign in 2023 included 86 catches, setting an NFL record for receptions by a rookie tight end at the time.

The 24-year-old appeared in only nine games during the 2025 season before his injury, finishing with 40 receptions for 489 yards and three touchdowns.

Lions Add Tight End Depth During LaPorta’s Recovery
With uncertainty surrounding LaPorta’s availability throughout the offseason, Detroit bolstered its tight end room by signing veteran Tyler Conklin to a one-year contract. The team also added Thomas Gordon on a futures deal and signed undrafted rookie Miles Kitselman out of Tennessee.

During LaPorta’s absence, Brock Wright has continued to solidify his role as Detroit’s No. 2 tight end. Wright remains a valuable contributor as both a pass-catcher and run blocker in the Lions’ multiple tight-end formations.

Ben Bartch Also Expected Back for Training Camp
Campbell also revealed that offensive guard Ben Bartch is expected to be ready for training camp. Bartch has missed offseason workouts while recovering from a Lisfranc fracture suffered late in the 2025 season during his time with the San Francisco 49ers.

The veteran lineman has appeared in 55 NFL games with 24 starts across stints with the Jacksonville Jaguars and 49ers. While injuries have impacted his availability throughout his career, Detroit hopes he can provide valuable depth and competition along the offensive line in 2026.

Lions Looking Ahead to Training Camp
The Lions conclude mandatory minicamp this week before breaking for summer. While the organization has not yet announced an official start date for 2026 training camp, Detroit appears increasingly confident that both Sam LaPorta and Ben Bartch will be available when preparations begin for the upcoming season.
