Just before halftime in the Week 17 matchup between the Detroit Lions and San Francisco 49ers, right tackle Penei Sewell was seen heading to the locker room early, signaling a possible injury concern.

Following Detroit’s 40-34 victory over the 49ers on Monday night, head coach Dan Campbell informed the media that Sewell is dealing with a thumb injury.

Fortunately, the injury doesn’t seem serious, as Campbell appeared unconcerned when discussing Sewell’s condition post-game.

“He should be good,” Campbell stated regarding Sewell.

Detroit had the option to rest their starters against San Francisco since the Minnesota Vikings’ win over Green Bay the previous day meant Week 18 would decide the division.

If Sewell had suffered a severe injury, Campbell would have faced criticism. Campbell explained his reasoning for playing starters in a game without playoff implications.

“Campbell said he considered sitting starters after the Vikings’ win,” reported Colton Pouncy of The Athletic. “He felt it wouldn’t be fair to expect reserves, who hadn’t prepared, to play since the starters practiced all week. And since not everyone could sit, some starters had to play.”

Sewell finishing the game is a positive sign, but his condition will still be monitored throughout the week. However, knowing Sewell, it would take a lot to keep him sidelined.

The Lions now have a few days to recover before facing the Vikings for the NFC North crown and the conference’s top seed on Sunday, Jan. 5. Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. ET.
