After losing Carson Beck to the NFL, coach Mario Cristobal explains why acquiring veteran transfer Darian Mensah was crucial to stabilizing a young, developing Miami Hurricanes quarterback group.
Before Darian Mensah arrived on the Coral Gables campus, there were questions about who would be the next Miami Hurricanes quarterback. Following the National Championship game, Carson Beck was scheduled to leave and has declared for the 2026 NFL Draft. He battled personal challenges, recuperating from offseason elbow surgery, not throwing until fall camp, and yet making a great influence on the squad.
Beck completed 338 of 467 passes, leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in completion percentage with a 72. 4, totaling 3,813 yards and 30 touchdowns, with 12 interceptions, and starting all 16 games. The Arizona Cardinals chose the 24-year-old with the 65th overall pick in the third round.
In an exclusive interview with Jacksonville’s Sports Radio, coach Mario Cristobal revealed that the quarterback group before Mensah arrived was unprepared to take over.
“You have to analyze your squad and be honest with yourself,” he said. “Where do we lack what we need to compete at the top level? We are confident with our quarterback group. It is not quite at that level yet. We believe it will be ready in a year, but we needed a seasoned expert right now. Quarterback was the one position we believed we needed someone with experience who had performed at a high level and could benefit both himself and us in this system. Once Darian Mensah stepped into the portal, we focused our attention on him. We are delighted to welcome him to our team. “
Mensah had an All-ACC season with the Duke Blue Devils, completing 334 of 500 passes for a 66. 8% completion percentage and leading the ACC in passing yards (3,973) and touchdowns (34), with six interceptions in 14 starts. He guided the team to its first ACC Football Championship since 1989.
Before joining the transfer portal, the Hurricanes were considering novice quarterbacks: Luke Nickel, Judd Anderson, Joe Borchers, Vinny Gonzalez, and Dereon Coleman. Emory Williams departed from the program after three seasons and has joined the East Carolina Pirates.
Mensah is expected to be a one-and-done situation, similar to Beck and Cam Ward. Meanwhile, the 21-year-old will serve as a useful veteran both on and off the field, assisting in the development of the younger quarterbacks who will be seeking to lead the Hurricanes’ future offense.
The program has done a fantastic job at developing players at other positions, but it’s time to move on to what is perhaps the most important in football.
