After a disappointing playoff exit in the 2024 season, the Detroit Lions are turning their attention to the offseason and the 2025 NFL Draft. One area that might be addressed is the quarterback position, as there has been increasing speculation about the team’s long-term plans at the spot.

In a recent mock draft simulation, I made a bold prediction, selecting quarterback Daxton Dart from Ole Miss with the Lions’ second-round pick. This would be a major move, especially considering that some projections have Dart going as high as No. 28 overall, which seems far-fetched. The Lions are not expected to pick a quarterback that high, and Dart is more likely a Day 2 prospect, not a first-round pick.

While Jared GoffÐ remains the starting quarterback for the foreseeable future, there’s growing uncertainty about his long-term role in Detroit. The decision to choose Teddy Bridgewater as the No. 2 quarterback over Hendon Hooker during the playoff game against the Washington Commanders has raised questions about the team’s faith in Hooker as their future QB.

If the Lions are looking for a new quarterback to eventually take over, Dart could be a solid choice. At 25 years old by the 2028 season, Dart has put up impressive numbers at Ole Miss, completing 69.3% of his passes, amassing 4,279 yards, 29 touchdowns, and just six interceptions in 2024. His dual-threat ability also stands out, as he added 495 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 124 carries.

Though Dart has demonstrated great potential, he will need time to adjust to the NFL’s level of competition. His ability to read defenses after the snap and improve his decision-making will be key factors in his development. However, with his athletic tools and playmaking ability, Dart has the upside to succeed at the next level.

Selecting Dart would show the Lions’ commitment to their future, with Goff likely staying as the starter until at least the 2027 season. Dart could be the player Detroit looks to build around for the long haul. As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, keep an eye on Daxton Dart, especially if the Lions don’t see Hooker as their QB of the future.
