During the 2024 NFL offseason, the Detroit Lions made significant investments to strengthen their cornerback unit.
They signed Amik Robertson to a two-year contract.
Additionally, they acquired Carlton Davis through a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
To further bolster their secondary, the Lions used their top two draft picks on cornerbacks, selecting Alabama’s Terrion Arnold and Missouri’s Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
Despite these efforts, the team still faces uncertainty at the position heading into the 2025 offseason.
With Davis now a free agent and neither rookie proving to be a reliable option in their debut seasons, the Lions find themselves once again in need of reinforcements at cornerback.
Given this situation, one analyst has suggested Detroit should target a lesser-discussed free-agent cornerback to address their needs.
In a piece highlighting an ideal free-agent signing for each NFL team, CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani pointed to New Orleans Saints cornerback Paulson Adebo as a potential fit for Detroit.
Adebo hasn’t drawn as much attention as other available corners like Davis or the Jets’ D.J. Reed, but he arguably deserves more recognition.
A broken femur limited Adebo to just seven games in 2024, yet he was on track for an outstanding season before the injury.
During those seven appearances, he recorded 52 total tackles, three interceptions, and 10 passes defended.
In his last full season, he tallied 76 tackles, four picks, and 18 pass breakups while holding opposing quarterbacks to a 55% completion rate in 2023.
Adebo’s combination of physicality and effective pass coverage would make him a valuable addition to the Lions’ secondary. Furthermore, his recent injury could lead to a more affordable contract, making him a potential steal for Detroit.
