Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff recently spoke publicly for the first time about Ben Johnson’s departure and the hiring of John Morton as the team’s new offensive coordinator.

The Detroit Lions offense is set for significant coaching changes in 2025, but with most players on break, their opinions on the adjustments will likely remain unknown until offseason workouts begin—unless they share them on a podcast. However, Goff was available to the media last week while in Florida for the Pro Bowl, where he shared his thoughts with the SiriusXM NFL crew.

Goff had a strong bond with former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, making his departure—especially to a division rival, the Chicago Bears—a tough pill to swallow for the quarterback.

“He’s a hell of a coach. He’s made a huge impact on my career,” Goff said. “I’m obviously a big fan of his. I was joking with him, saying I wish he wasn’t staying in our division so I wouldn’t have to face him twice a year, but he’s going to do a great job. Hopefully, not too great, since we’re division rivals. But I’ll always be a fan of his, and we’ll always have a great relationship.”

Regarding his new offensive coordinator, John Morton, Goff already has some familiarity with him. Morton was a senior offensive assistant for the Lions in 2022 when Detroit was implementing a new offensive system under Johnson. While Goff didn’t go into extensive detail about Morton, he did express confidence in his new coordinator.

“We were together in 2022. He was an assistant on our staff and has done this before,” Goff said. “He’s been a coordinator before, has a lot of experience in this league, and has worked with some great coaches. I’m excited to work with him and see where we can go.”

The Lions’ new coaching staff has yet to speak publicly, but they are typically made available to the media during NFL Combine week, which is scheduled for February 27 to March 2.
