The Edmonton Oilers still have much to learn about Connor McDavid.

And on that issue, there is both good and bad news.

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reported recently that he does not believe McDavid will seek a way out this summer.

Next summer? According to LeBrun, the decision might be made at that point.

He believes that McDavid would not abandon Edmonton by leaving as a free agent in two years.

It’s a fascinating tale to follow, and one that will definitely be surrounded by speculation and rumors as long as McDavid’s current deal with the Oilers lasts.

McDavid began the 2025-26 season in the final year of his contract, but he agreed to an extension just before the season began, adding two years to the agreement.

So, now that the Oilers’ season ended with a first-round postseason defeat, McDavid has two years remaining.

Despite being widely regarded as the greatest hockey player on the planet, he has yet to win a Stanley Cup.

In 2024, the Oilers lost in seven games in the Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers.

In 2025, the same Panthers defeated them in six games in the Finals.

The Oilers, however, fell to a worse regular season record and a first-round defeat this year.

The Oilers are running out of time to win one with McDavid. And this next season will most likely be critical to their prospects, as well as whether McDavid stays around any longer.
