The Detroit Lions are expected to be linked to numerous high-profile players this offseason, given their strong cap space and a 2024 season finish of 15-2, positioning them as Super Bowl contenders. Alongside their interest in defensive upgrades, the Lions are now being connected to a former All-Pro wide receiver on offense. On February 4, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler shared on Sportscaster (via Mike Payton of A to Z Sports) that a league executive indicated the Lions could be a potential landing spot for Cooper Kupp, the Los Angeles Rams’ star wide receiver. The executive mentioned Detroit because of Kupp’s past connection with quarterback Jared Goff. The two were teammates early in their careers, even making Pro Bowls together, creating a strong rapport that could benefit the Lions.
Kupp has revealed that the Rams are exploring trade options for him this offseason. However, despite the Goff connection, it’s difficult to see how Kupp would fit with Detroit’s current roster. The Lions already feature two 1,000-yard receivers, one of whom is among the NFL’s elite, along with Sam LaPorta, a tight end who’s averaged around 800 yards per season in his first two years. Moreover, the team is built around a strong running game with David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, supported by one of the league’s best offensive lines. With so many offensive weapons already in place, it’s unclear how bringing in Kupp would make sense for the Lions or benefit them in the long run.
If the trade goes through, Detroit would be acquiring a player who was once considered one of the league’s top receivers, although Kupp’s production dipped to 67 receptions for 710 yards last season. Ultimately, both the Lions and Kupp may be better off finding other opportunities that align more closely with their needs and aspirations.
