As the Detroit Lions gear up for the 2025 offseason, Jared Goff’s position as the starting quarterback is firmly secure. However, questions linger regarding the backup quarterback role, particularly with veteran Teddy Bridgewater set to become a free agent. This has sparked speculation that the Lions might decide to trade Hendon Hooker, their third-round pick from the 2023 draft.

Backup QB Situation in Detroit

After Teddy Bridgewater joined the Lions midseason to back up Goff, it became evident that Hooker’s spot was far from guaranteed. As a developmental quarterback, Hooker didn’t see much action in his rookie year and was even left off the active roster during the Lions’ playoff loss to the Washington Commanders. This benching has raised doubts about his future with the team, especially considering Goff’s long-term contract.

Reasons for a Potential Trade

Given that Goff will likely remain the starter for the foreseeable future, Hooker’s chances of seeing significant playing time in Detroit seem slim. With most of the Lions’ key players locked into long-term contracts, Hooker could be seen as trade bait. TWSN’s team has predicted that the Lions may look to deal Hooker in the offseason, possibly receiving a fourth-round pick from a team in need of a quarterback.

Trading Hooker could give Detroit the opportunity to bring in a more seasoned backup quarterback—someone who can step in if Goff gets injured. Considering Hooker’s limited experience and development in his first season, the Lions may feel that a more proven quarterback would better meet their needs moving forward.

A New Opportunity for Hooker

For Hooker, a trade could provide him with a fresh start and a chance to develop into a starting quarterback elsewhere. A move could work out well for both him and the Lions, allowing Hooker to progress in a new environment while giving Detroit a more reliable backup option for 2025 and beyond.

However, unless Detroit receives an irresistible offer, it’s likely they’ll hang onto Hooker for the time being.
