The have built one of the NFL’s toughest and most respected rosters, and linebacker has quickly become one of the biggest faces of that culture.

Unlike teammate , who famously used draft-day criticism as motivation after falling to the fourth round in 2021, Campbell entered the league with different expectations. The former Iowa standout was selected No. 18 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, becoming the first linebacker taken that year.

At the time, many analysts criticized Detroit for selecting Campbell so early, questioning the value of drafting an off-ball linebacker in the first round. Some even labeled the pick a “reach.”

Three seasons later, those criticisms have aged poorly.

After earning All-Pro honors in 2025 and recording 173 tackles last season, Campbell signed a four-year, $81 million extension with Detroit, making him one of the highest-paid linebackers in NFL history.

Despite hearing the criticism throughout his rookie season, Campbell recently revealed that his focus was never about proving doubters wrong. Instead, he wanted to reward the people who believed in him from the start.

“I kind of came in with the goal of I’d be a Lion, no matter what,” Campbell said. “For me, it was more about the principle of I just want to be in the elite category because I feel like I’m an elite linebacker.”

Campbell explained that remaining in Detroit mattered more to him than becoming the NFL’s highest-paid linebacker. The former Iowa Hawkeyes star said he wanted to help the Lions maintain their championship core while continuing to build toward a Super Bowl.

The Lions linebacker also embraced Detroit’s blue-collar mentality from the moment he arrived. Known for his toughness and durability, Campbell has never missed a game during his NFL career and continues to embody the physical identity head coach has built in Detroit.

Even after securing a life-changing contract, Campbell insists nothing about his mindset has changed.

“Honestly, people think that it’s going to change everything,” Campbell said. “But I can tell you this much: I woke up and I still had the same problems. I’m still Jack Campbell. So, for me, it’s just added fuel to my fire.”

Now, Campbell’s focus is centered on helping the Lions take the next step toward winning a Super Bowl, something he says motivates him far more than any draft criticism ever could.
