The NCAA is proposing a new policy that could fundamentally reshape Greg Gard’s player acquisition approach.

The Wisconsin Badgers are not only anticipating substantial modifications for the future, but there’s a chance this could significantly influence their 2026-27 season.

Jonathan Givony clarified the NCAA’s new international recruitment guidelines, stating that they are effectively barring international players from participating in college sports altogether.

“ACB, France, Italy, Australian NBL and anyone who’s ever played for a EuroLeague team, even for next to nothing, are suddenly permanently ineligible?” Givony queried in response to Kevin Sweeney’s post detailing the NCAA’s official statement.

To illustrate, Wisconsin currently has six players on its roster who have competed abroad: Austin Rapp, Hayden Jones, Isaac Riddle, Jackson Ball, Owen Foxwell, and Victory Onuetu.

This rule would not exclusively impact Wisconsin; its effects would be widespread. Is there a scenario where this policy is enacted before the 2026-27 season, potentially compelling the Badgers to cancel their season? While that appears improbable, unexpected developments do occur, and a team like LSU is experiencing considerable apprehension.
