Sam Dekker, a former Wisconsin Badgers standout, has been named an assistant coach for the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Dekker, who made his reputation with the Badgers men’s basketball team, has spent the last several years playing abroad.

The Houston Rockets’ No. 18 overall selection reacted to the news by saying: Full circle moment. Basketball may actually create tales in your life that you would never expect.

In the Gamecocks’ formal statement, Dekker remarked, “I couldn’t be more pleased to be a part of Gamecock basketball. ” I’m really thankful to Coach [Lamont] Paris for entrusting me with this position, and I take it very seriously. The decision to move from player to coach was not one I made lightly, but joining Coach Paris and this program was a dream opportunity.

I’m excited to return to the college game and compete at such a high level in the SEC, he said. My 11 years as a professional have given me numerous unforgettable moments working with great people, coaches, and styles. Some of my greatest memories as a player were competing in two Final Fours under Coach Paris, and I hope to do so again with him. My goal is to win in March and provide our players with the best opportunity for success both on and off the court. ”

Dekker, 32, will now work alongside Paris, the Gamecocks’ coach since 2022, who has a 62-68 record with the team.

Sam’s unique experiences and abilities will enable him to have an instant and significant influence on our players and program, according to Paris. He is a winner from start to finish, and I am pleased to include him to our team as an assistant coach.

It is noteworthy that Paris served as an assistant for the Badgers from 2010 to 2017 before taking his first head coaching position at Chattanooga. Tanner Bronson, a former Badgers guard and fellow Wisconsinite, has helped Paris since 2017.
