The Tennessee Volunteers men’s basketball team is sick of losing by only one game to their first Final Four trip. This transfer market cycle, Tennessee prioritized chasing some of the country’s greatest players.
Building an elite squad in today’s collegiate basketball scene is difficult, particularly with the increasing significance of NIL financing. Tennessee was apparently ready to drastically boost expenditure.
“Tennessee basketball is on pace to be among the elite in NIL spending next season. According to On3’s Pete Nakos on Thursday, the Vols are one of a few schools expected to spend $10 million or more in NIL for its roster next season, according to VolQuest’s Grant Ramey.
With that money, head coach Rick Barnes and his team put together the nation’s greatest transfer portal class, according to USA Today.
“Tennessee basketball continues to add to its star-studded transfer portal haul, adding Wake Forest guard Juke Harris on Monday, May 4. Harris, the No. 2 overall player in the transfer portal in USA TODAY’s ratings, averaged 21. 4 points, 6. 5 rebounds, and 1. 9 assists last season while shooting 44. 4%. He picked the Vols over Michigan, which he visited, as well as North Carolina and other schools. “Harris’ commitment boosts Tennessee’s portal grab to No. 1 in USA TODAY Sports’ class rankings,” according to Austin Curtright of USA Today.
It was later revealed how much Tennessee invested in its portal class this spring. According to reports, Barnes had between $18 million and $20 million to create next season’s team.
“The all-in price for one of the largest portal classes this cycle is over $18 million,” according to Nakos. “Tennessee may reach the $20 million mark, depending on the last elements the program adds. “
Tennessee plainly had no misgivings about supplying Barnes with the NIL funding required to build a genuine championship contender. Defense has always been the program’s backbone under Barnes, but this year’s squad looks capable of providing considerably more offensive power.
Barnes has already cemented his position as one of college basketball’s top recruiters due to his extraordinary ability to form meaningful bonds with players. When combined with top NIL backing, this level of roster construction has the potential to become the new norm for Tennessee basketball.
